KUCHING: Organisers of the Asean Fashion Week (AFW) 2012 to be held here from Sept 10 to 16 are scouting for models willing to commit to world class events.

Met at the AFW 2012 model casting at Hilton Hotel yesterday, organising chairman Arwin Sharma said they were looking for Sarawakian models for the show.

“It needs 40 males and 40 females and we have yet to fill the numbers. While some had the height and quality, it is hard to find local models who can commit to the event,” he said.

Those selected will spend a month in advance at Sarawak Cultural Village where they will be groomed and trained.

If the numbers were not filled, the organisers would consider seeking candidates from Brunei, Sabah and neighbouring Pontianak for a July casting in Kuching.

Karissa Kara Simon of Kuching, 22, who came for the casting session told thesundaypost she would give her fullest commitment as it was an opportunity to launch herself at international level.

“AFW is a major international event and commitment is vital to be in the show,” said Kara who had five years’ experience in the Malaysian modelling scene.

Another aspiring model, Izzurul Hisyam, 25, of Kuching said Sarawakian models had the talent to be in international events but were waiting to be discovered.

“Some had other commitments, while others with the height and shape were not  brave enough,” he said.

Still pursuing his Masters, Izzurul who had modelled since 17 years old had worked for designers like Edric Ong, Tom Abang Saufi and modelled for the KL Fashion Week.

AFW 2012 which is sanctioned by the Asean Secretariat and Ministry of Tourism Sarawak will also see World Fashion Organization, World Fashion   Week and World Fashion Exhibition based in New York and Washington participate in the event.

Held for the first time in Kuching, the inaugural AFW to be held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) will showcase stylish Asean eccentricity from 10 Asean member states.
