KUCHING:  Plans are afoot to build a RM8 million cultural centre at Jalan Apar-Segong near Bau, as an avenue for international festivals.

The centre, to be built on a two-acre piece of land adjoining Association of Research and Development of Singai Sarawak (Redeems) centre would be able to accommodate crowds by the thousands.

The main attraction to the planned centre, apart from its large open space for performances, is a 38-unit longhouse equipped with modern amenities. The new centre will also boast an exhibition hall, business centres, trading areas and others.

“It has been our desire to have a full-fledged cultural centre where people can hold their performances daily. The idea is to have a big open space where we can perform to thousands of people.

“This centre is not only for Bau but can also become a venue for international events and festivals,” said Redeems president and Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie during a press conference at his office at Batu Kawah new township here yesterday.

Nansian who is also Assistant Minister for Community Services added that the project proposal had been submitted to the Federal Government for evaluation and that the project would commence after approval. He suggested that the centre be used as back-up or complimentary venue for the annual Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) among others.
