SIBU: The Health Department has mounted checks in schools throughout the state to destroy the dreaded Aedes mosquitoes’ breeding grounds.

Its director Dr Zulkifli Jantan said yesterday, adding that they were working closely with school authorities to disseminate information to school children on the dangers posed by the blood sucking insects.

Schools reopen today after two weeks of break.

“Our officers have beefed up checks in schools statewide to rid the menace by destroying the Aedes mosquitoes’ breeding grounds,” Dr Zulkifli said.

The check consists of ensuring the surroundings are clean and free of Aedes breeding grounds.

In an earlier interview, Dr Zulkifli reminded the public to be on guard against Aedes mosquitoes during the prevailing dry weather.

“This is because hot weather with intermittent rain is very conducive to Aedes breeding. The other reason is during the dry season, people collect water in containers.

“As such, people are advised to use clean the containers weekly,” he advised.

He also said the dengue situation in the state is stable.

“People should spend 10 minutes to clean their compound. Any unwanted receptacles that can collect water must be properly disposed of while keep your compound clean.”

He stressed among others, they were continuously mounting awareness campaign and health education to encourage villagers to roll out more cleaning campaigns (‘gotong-royong’) to create a heightened awareness on Aedes eradication.
