MIRI: Karate exponents from Miri formed the bulk of the state Sukma XV team with seven from Miri Karate Centre of Excellence and a sole representative from Malaysian Association of Shitoryu Karate-Do.
Sarawak Karate Association (Saka) head coach Alharir Mohammed revealed that they are targeting at least a gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Pahang.
“Since 2010, Miri karate exponents managed to spearhead Sarawak’s challenge for glory in Sukma. For the coming Sukma XV in Pahang, our exponents formed the eight-member state Karate team. In the 2010 Sukma, the state karate team collected one silver and two bronze medals,” Alharir told The Borneo Post yesterday.
“With six exponents from our 2010 Sukma still eligible to participate this year, we are confident of achieving our goals, particularly from Mohd Suffree Mohd Ali, our gold medal prospect in the Male Kumite 60 kg,” added Alharir.
Suffree has also been selected to represent Malaysia in the Karate Championship in Jakarta from June 23 to 25.
The other five exponents are Dayangku Nurdiyana Awangku Tangah, Ngui Xin Riu, Alhasbi Alharir, Awangku Muhd Fauzi, and Mohd Faiq Zainudden, while the two new recruits are Mohd Khaliq Seppri and Nuruljannah Tuwah.
With the exception of Ngui, the exponents hail from Miri Karate Centre of Excellence while Ngui is from the Miri Branch of the Malaysian Association of Shitoryu Karate-Do. Alharir added that the recent 32nd National Senior Karate Championship in Putrajaya on June 9-10 was also an ideal benchmark for their performance.
“We were only beaten in the final by national athletes from Pulau Pinang. In the two-day event, the male and female teams Kata routines successfully won two silver medals.”
“With the national athletes not competing in Sukma, we stand greater chance for success to bring more karate glory to Sarawak,” informed Alharir.
He added that the championship was part of their female and male individual Kata and Team warming-up matches before Sukma XV. In March this year, Saka also successfully organised the 22nd National Youth Karate Competition in Miri.
The state Karate contingent will be amongst the first team from Sarawak to leave for Pahang on June 28.
