KUCHING: Some 300 cyclists are expected to join the ‘Family Fun Ride 2012’ in conjunction with the Kuching City South Council’s (MBKS’) Community Event 2012 on June 24.

The ride, jointly organised by the council, Sarawak Cycling Association and Kuching Cops Cycling Club (KCCC), aims to highlight the role of responsible citizens in keeping their home and city clean and green to promote a healthier life and to raise awareness as well as encourage city folk to involve themselves in activities that promote physical and mental health.

Organising chairperson Irwan Zulkarnain Hasbie yesterday said the fun ride also aimed to enhance mutual understanding and teamwork among family members and foster neighbourliness. Registration will begin at 6.30am on the day, while the flag-off will take place at 8am.

“The rider will start and end at the Malaysia-China Friendship Park. Participation is free and we will also be giving away lucky draw prizes to 50 lucky riders,” he said.

Police personnel and marshals will brief riders on safety matters, he said, and guide them on the route.

Sarawak Cycling Association honorary secretary Zulaihi Seri said all types of bicycles are allowed provided they are equipped with brakes and riders wear helmets.

“We will conduct a random check on that day and if we feel there are riders who do not meet safety requirements, we will advise them not to take part because we do not want any injury to happen to them and to other people as well.

“Of course, we encourage people to join this event but we also want to emphasise safety,” he said.
