IRB: Level of public awareness on taxes still unsatisfactory

KOTA BAHARU: The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) finds that the level of awareness among members of the public on their statutory responsibility to pay tax is still unsatisfactory.

IRB deputy director-general (Compliance) Datuk Dr Siti Mariam Che Ayub said tax payers especially in the rural areas were still not adept in keeping accounts to pay tax as stipulated under the IRB act.

She said IRB would continue to raise awareness among the people especially individuals on their obligations as tax payers.

“Among the measures is the ‘Revenue Friendly Operation’ conducted throughout the country focussing on targeted areas,” she told reporters after opening the national level Revenue Friendly Operation Series 2/2012 here yesterday.

Dr Siti Mariam said in conjunction with the three-day operation in Kelantan which began yesterday, IRB was targeting to issue notices for revenue claim in 354 cases involving a backlog sum of RM15.9 million which covered 295 individuals and 59 companies.

“Most of the traders who are eligible to pay tax did not keep proper business record resulting in them failing to pay according to regulations,” she said. — Bernama
