MIRI: The Miri Youth Chinese Orchestra (Myco) will perform tomorrow (June 15) at the Imperial Hotel Miri ballroom starting 7.30pm.

Conducted by Tham Wan Siong, the concert entitled ‘Symphony of Season’ will feature ‘The Four Seasons’ by China’s famous composer Lu Lianghui.

“You’ll never know the difference between Lu’s ‘The Four Seasons’ and (Italian baroque composer) Antonio Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ if you do not attend the concert,” said Tham, who is Pei Min Middle School Chinese Orchestra (PMCO) resident conductor.

“Just buy a ticket and find out for yourself.”

The programme will also include the work of famous Taiwanese composer Su Wen-Cheng.

Free seating tickets are priced at RM35.

For tickets or more information, call Myco (016-8747183 or 019-8290807), In Tune Piano Company (016-8795776) or Chamber School of Music (085-652487).

Founded last April, Myco comprises 33 Chinese music instrumentalists.

The modern large Chinese orchestra is a 20th century development based on the Western symphony orchestra, but uses Chinese instruments. It also emulates Western orchestra in terms of the seating position. Today’s typical Chinese orchestra also includes Western cello and double bass, as well as other Western instruments such as vibraphone and triangle.

Many Chinese instruments are also modified versions of traditional instruments, for example, the diyinsheng (large bass sheng) and the zhongyin (alto) suona, which is fitted with keys.
