KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Welfare Department handed over assistance in the form of kitchen utensils, clothes and cash amounting to nearly RM5,000 to the family whose house was burnt down on Wednesday.

The fire also burnt to death a woman and her two grandchildren when fire razed the semi-concrete house in Kpg Rembus near here.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah personally came to hand over the welfare assistance. Director of Welfare Department Noriah Ahmad also came along.

The deceased have been identified as Uka Jenal, 54, and her grandchildren Cristiano Ronaldo Kegan, 6, and Wayne Rooney Austin, 5.

Uka’s husband, Tahir Saban, 57, said they were just arriving at the house when they saw smoke billowing from the house around 2pm on Wednesday.

He said his late wife rushed into the house, followed by the two boys, trying to salvage things, but perished in the fire instead.

Cristiano was the child of Kegeen Tahir and Elsie Ahling while Wayne was the child of Austin Tahir and Santi Danggis.

When contacted yesterday, Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan said he had pledged a personal donation of RM1,000 to the family and also extended his deepest condolences to Tahir and his family.
