MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) will visit all resident committees (RCs) under its jurisdiction to improve its public service delivery system, said Miri mayor Lawrence Lai.

“We started the visit with Kampung Masjid Kuala Baram last week and the latest are zone 9 areas comprising Piasau Jaya Phase 1, 2, 3 & 4 and Saberkas Commercial Centre,” he told the media after visiting areas in zone 9 last Thursday.

Lai said visits would be conducted once a week for all 25 RCs in the city.

The council has yet to decide on which RC to visit next week.

“We prefer to make a surprise visit to get the real picture on our service in the village. It will help the council get direct feedback and information in order to seek the best solutions to problems.”

He explained that the RC was a new working concept adopted by council to establish closer ties with the people, understand their needs and expectations and provide satisfactory services to them.

For the RC to operate, areas under the council’s jurisdiction have been divided into 25 zones with a councillor in charge of each zone, and a senior officer attached as a liaison officer to each RC.

RCs are set up to make Miri a beautiful resort city; enhance its safety and security; make the city lively, vibrant and attractive; encourage public participation to achieve sustainable development towards a green city; strengthen harmony and goodwill among the community; foster a better relationship and communication between the council and the community; disseminate information and channel feedback on policies, services and programme of the councilas well as receive feedback.

RCs aim to assist in the promotion of neighbourliness, harmony and cohesiveness among residents; liaise with and make recommendations to the council on the needs and aspirations of residents; improve council programme and services; upkeep civil consciousness among residents; and instill a sense of ownership of environment and public facilities provided by the relevant authorities.
