TAWAU: Members of the Territorial Army 516 Regiment were urged to continue practising the spirit and willingness to defend the country and not just assume the career as a source of income.

The spirit is necessary because the responsibility of the volunteer is important for the welfare of all.

Brigadier-General Tan Sri Datuk Liew Yun Fah when opening the Young Soldier Basic Course Series 1/2012, yesterday at the regiment camp at Kukusan, said those entitled to wear the regiment’s uniform should know that they have also been given the responsibility to defend the country from all threats.

“If it is only for the sake of getting the regiment’s allowances, then I urge them not to join because what we need is commitment,” he said when meeting about 150 new volunteers who will undergo a month’s training.

Liew also said their action to serve the country through their involvement in the regiment would become the pride of their families.

At the same time, he also suggested that volunteers learn what should be learned during the course to enhance their knowledge as this would benefit them when they perform tasks they needed to do.

“A soldier can not be considered competent if he only has sophisticated weapons and adequate equipment,” he said.

Liew explain that basic knowledge was also needed, and education received is an important aspect to them.
