Hock Kwong team confident of retaining SBA Challenge Cup

SIBU: Defending champion Hock Kwong team is eyeing for another shot at the title of the Sibu Badminton Association (SBA) Challenge Cup 2012 which starts on Monday at SMK Sacred Heart Centenary Hall.
Marshalled by former national player Ting Wei Ping and former Sibu champion, Ting Ming Wong, the team is looking formidable in their starting lists of players.
“Any upset appears remote and so long as the team members stay focused, the title is surely for them to lift,” SBA treasurer Yong King Sung said.
Hock Kwong are in Group A together PSKPP, MUC, SA and Prowira while Tyrelink Wheel, Paris Bridal, Delta Cafe, Ken and GOF are in Group B.
Yong said with the exception of Tyrelink which also comprised several former divisional players, the rest of the teams are expected to make the event more interesting with their determination to overthrown tournament favorites.
“However, nothing is impossible and the team that make the least mistakes have a chance to shine,” he said on the event which will be played on group basis with the top two teams from each group advancing to the next round.
Each team format will be played on three doubles and a player is only allowed to play once in any tie.
Each team shall be allowed only one seeded player – the names as provided in the SBA list – and the listed player must play in the first double in the team format.
The rules and regulations of the SBA shall apply and all decisions made by the association shall be final.
The champion will get the top prize money of RM1,000; first runner-up get RM500, second runner-up, RM350 and third runner-up, RM150.
Urging badminton enthusiasts to come and watch the games, Yong said among the objectives of the competition is to promote keen interest in badminton among the locals particularly among the youths.
SBA president Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony at 7pm on June 18.
