TAWAU: A 43-year-old local man who faced a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a police officer was yesterday ordered by the Magistrate’s Court to be sent to Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang for observation, to determine the state of his mind.

Magistrate Edward Paul issued the order on Abdul Jalil bin Jakara after the latter exhibited abnormal behaviour in court and set July 13 for the continuation of the case.

Abdul Jalil was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of one year, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, a 56-year-old police officer was having dinner in a restaurant on June 10 at about 7.45pm when the accused approached the former and asked for money.

The police officer told the accused not to cause any disturbance and the accused hit him on the forehead and on the left cheek before the accused was arrested.
