Razmee makes winning start

EASY WIN: Razmee hits a forehand return to Gregory Tan in the first round of the men’s singles at the Sarawak Closed yesterday. He won straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

KUCHING: Razmee Rawi got off to a flying start in the Sarawak Closed Tennis Championship when he whipped Gregory Tan 6-1, 6-1 in the first round opener of the men’s singles at Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association centre yesterday.

The player from Persatuan Tenis Bumiputera Sarawak will next meet Gregory’s brother Kenneth in today’s semi-finals.

Kenneth had a tough time in overcoming another junior player Ricco Soh 7-5, 7-5 in another match.  Razmee, who is also playing in the men’s doubles with his partner Augustine Chang, have received a bye in the first round.

Razmee-Augustine will play Kenneth Tan-Alvin Teng in the semi-finals after the latter pair defeated Arman Iza-Bujang Mohamad 6-3, 6-2 in the first round yesterday.

Other players who won their singles matches yesterday were Mohamad Norhairi Khaider who beat Muhammad Zaki Pauzi 7-5, 6-4, and Alvin Teng who disposed of Rohizat Achop  6-2, 7-5.

Norhairi will play Alvin today for a place in the final.

In the men’s doubles, Gregory Tan and Ricco Soh beat Borhan-Rohizat Achop 6-2, 6-4 to set up a semi-finals clash with Norhairi-Zaki.

In this championship organised by SLTA, there were only eight contestants in the men’s singles competition while the men’s doubles attracted only five pairs.
