Association to mould future paddlers

Posted on June 19, 2012, Tuesday

SIBU: The Sibu Table Tennis Association is now resorting to organising lower level tournaments to discover more talents in the sport.

Association chairman Dr Clement Chen said the recent tournaments organised for junior paddlers were the example.

He revealed that these competitions had successfully attracted participation of players who were new to the sport.

“From these competitions, we’re able to scout more potential players for training. Given time, we are optimistic to be able to turn train them to become elite players,” he explained.

Speaking at the closing of the Sibu Division Non-Chinese Table Tennis Competition 2012 cum Sibu Division Junior Group Table Tennis Competition 2012 at the association’s stadium here on Sunday, Chen said that junior players must be proactive.

“We hope they will respond positively to our calls for participation in our various competitions organised for them. There had been time when our competitions failed to be held because of poor response,” he lamented.

The chairman also appealed to the elite players to guide the junior players. “I hope players the elite players would interact and mentor the young players,” he said.
