Labourer fined RM2,000 for possession of air rifle

KUCHING: A labourer was fined RM2,000 in default two months’ jail in the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous firearm, an air rifle.

Lai Nyet Kian, 39, from Batu Kawa appeared before Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng who convicted him of a charge under Section 36 (1) of the Firearm Act 1960.

He was charged with possessing the gun at his house at Batu Kawa at about 8.40am on June 11.

The fact of the case stated that a group of policemen went to his house and found a rifle in his living room.

The suspect identified as Lai was brought to the police station for investigation and interrogation.

He revealed that the firearm belonged to his friend Ah Kit who could not be traced.

ASP Carl Patrick Ramesh prosecuted while Lai, who was not represented by any lawyer, paid the fine.

In another Magistrates’ Court, a security guard was sentenced to two months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to shoplifting.

Fadilah Ujang, 24, from Kampung Tabuan Hilir appeared before Magistrate Maris Agan who convicted him of a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

Fadilah was guilty of shoplifting seven cans of Tiger beer, two cans of TsingTao beer, four packets of Fiesta Frankfurter and two packets of Ayamas Chicken Frankfurter at Smart Supermarket at about 4.17pm on June 16 this year.

In the same court room, an unemployed man was fined RM700 in default a month’s imprisonment for trespassing.

Mohd Loud Safari Ramlee, 25, from Kampung Bintawa trespassed into a Sesco substation at X-Fab Sdn Bhd, an electronic factory in Samajaya at about 7pm on June 13 this year.

He was convicted of the charge under Section 447 of the Penal Code.
