MIRI: Pustaka Miri is currently holding an exhibition on the last Rajah Muda of Sarawak, Anthony Walter Dayrell Brooke, from June 20 to July 20.

Themed ‘Remembering Anthony’, the exhibition provides insights into his life from his early years to his experiences as the Rajah Muda of Sarawak during the British rule up until his demise in 2011 at the ripe old age of 98.

Pustaka Miri in a statement yesterday said the exhibition is currently held on the ground floor foyer of the library and it is open daily for public viewing from 11am to 7pm, except on public holidays.

The third Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Vyner Brooke was Anthony’s uncle. Sarawak was under the rule of the Brooke Family, starting with Sir James Brooke in 1841 until the Japanese invasion in 1941.

Since Charles had no male heir, Anthony was duly appointed Rajah Muda (Crown Prince) and heir-apparent in his place.

He was the last member of the Brooke family to have administered the government of Sarawak (1939-1940).

After the Second World War (WWII) ended, and with Sarawak liberated from Japanese occupation, Anthony strongly opposed the annexation of Sarawak as a British colony in 1946, and responded to calls coming from the various newly formed political groups in Sarawak to lead the independence campaign against British rule.

Campaigning vigorously for five years, he withdrew in 1951 only when the spread of Communism seemed to be a greater threat to the stability of Sarawak.

Anthony then embarked upon a programme of world travel, speaking with groups on the rights, responsibility and power of the individual in helping to bring about a democratic world order.

Hence, members of the public are invited to view the exhibition to learn more about Anthony Brooke.

The exhibition also includes display of stamps from the Brooke era, which is the personal collection of avid antique collector Lucas Johnny.

Last year, similar exhibition was held in Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.
