Hive of activities at KIRC on July 7

KUCHING: Folks in the city are in for a special treat as the Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre (KIRC) near the Civic Centre here is set to host a variety of fun-filled sport events this coming July 7.

These include Sarawak’s first ever night run and cycling events with the anticipated participation of some 1000 people.

“In an effort to create a healthy society, Conqueror’s Vision Sdn Bhd and ouryouth.my will organise a hive of activities on July 7, 2012 at the Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre. The objectives of this event is to promote sports, cultural, musical performances and public health activities, especially for the youths,” said organising chairman and Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato’ Patrick Liew.

“We always strive to provide youth development programs and services to the community at large. The activities on the day will start at 7am and ends at 7pm. Musical performances by local bands will start at the venue’s Event Stage at 7pm until 11pm,” added Liew.

The event is sponsored by SLTA with the support of Marathon Association of Sarawak, Sarawak Basketball Association, Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association, Sarawak Futsal Association, the Sarawak Volleyball Association and Sarawak Surf Boards Association.

“Among the sports to be contested and held at KIRC are basketball, sepak takraw, futsal, volleyball and surfboards competitions. These competitions runs everyday commencing the week before the date of July 7 with the finals held on that date. The highlight of the day will be the staging of a night marathon and the ‘Night Bicycle City Ride’ at 7 pm,” informed Liew.

A total of 1000 participants are expected to be involved in the various events, including 20 participants from the Sports and Recreation Association of Persons with Disabilities (PESRON) in the marathon.

According to PESRON chairman Jamil Adam, some of the disabled participants had competed in the National Paralympics Championships. In addition, they also took part in the SEA Games and the 2010 Asian Games.
