Hock Kwong on a roll

Posted on June 21, 2012, Thursday

SIBU: Defending champion team Hock Kwong continued to rule supreme at the Sibu Badminton Association (SBA) Challenge Cup 2012 tournament by overwhelming MUC 3-0 in a Group A encounter at SMK Sacred Heart Centenary Hall on Tuesday.

With the victory, Hock Kwong had garnered six points. Earlier, the team trounced PSKPP, also with a comfortable 3-0 margin.

In the match against MUC, Hock Kwong opted for a change in strategy when they separated the lethal pair of former national player Ting Wei Ping and former Sibu champion Ting Ming Wong in the first double.

Ming Wong was paired with Melvin Sim instead but the strategy nearly backfired and the pair had to dig deep before finally overcoming MUC’s Abdul Rahim/Suhaili 22-20, 21-15.

In fact, it was the MUC pair who took the lead at 18-14 and 19-17 before Hock Kwong drew level at 20-20 and wrapped up the game at 22-20.

The loss apparently demoralised the MUC pair and they went down tamely at 15-21 in the second set.

In the other Group A match, team SA also took the maximum six points when they defeated PSKPP 3-0.

Hock Kwong were to take on SA last night (Wednesday) to determine which team would top the group.

From Group B, Tyrelink Wheel also displayed moments of fighting spirit and grabbed the maximum six points when they thrashed Delta Cafe 3-0.

The first double pair of Wong Kong Who and Lau Hua Chew, both former divisional players, beat Delta Cafe’s Francis Wong/Peter Ling 17-21, 21-16, 21-13.

Jeffery Phang and Johnson Ting stepped in for the second double and they beat Delta Cafe’s Choo Kwong Yong and Choo Kwong Wei 15-21, 21-19, 21-15 before the pair of Wee Teck Hock/Adam Yii completed the rout, beating MUC’s Chua Sing Kian/Richard Lim 21-16, 21-16.

In the other Group B match, Paris Bridal surprisingly edged Ken 2-1.

Ten teams took part in the week-long championship aimed at upgrading the popularity of the sport here.

The championship is played on group basis with the two top teams from each group advancing to the next round.
