Firefighters and police inspecting the Maybank building when black smoke was seen coming out through a window on the second floor of the building early yesterday morning.

KOTA KINABALU: Quick action by a newspaper editor helped to avert a fire at a bank in Jalan Pantai here early yesterday.

The editor with See Hua Daily News saw smoke around 2.20am billowing from the second floor premises occupied by Maybank.

“I had just finished work for the night and was walking towards my car when I saw thick black smoke pouring out of the window on the second floor of the building and immediately called the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said when met at the scene yesterday.

Two fire engines from Sembulan and Lintas and 12 personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived around 2.30am.

Only black smoke was seen coming out through a window on the second floor and firefighters had difficulty to gain entry into the building as the windows were fitted with steel bars.

About 20 minutes later, a Maybank staff was seen rushing towards the building to unlock the back door to allow the firefighters in.

Once the source and cause of the smoke was located, the fire was immediately put under control.

It was learnt that a fluorescent light had exploded, casuing burns to the ceiling and floor.

Sembulan station fire chief Ariffin Harris, who was at the scene, said the cause was yet to be determined.
