MIRI: Miri City will once again host Miss Global International Malaysia (MGIM), the only national pageant in East Malaysia, on July 21 at Eastwood Golf Valley Golf and Country Club.

The pageant is organised by MerveilleuxM Production, a local firm which organised the first MGIM last year.

Organising chairperson Marlene Lim said finalists from throughout Malaysia would compete in the pageant for a week. The winner will represent Malaysia at Miss Global International in Jamaica on September 24 this year.

“Our main aims are to raise funds and awareness for charitable causes and also to boost Jamaica’s tourism. It is the largest pageant in Jamaica and one of the largest in the Caribbean,” she told reporters here yesterday.

Among those present were the sponsors, and four local beauty queens — Star Jee Cheh Shihn (Miss Model of the World 2007), Yvonne Supang Lukas (Miss Sarawak Model of the World 2010 — second runner up), Jenna Alfred Sibat — MGIM 2011 finalist, and Mandy Lim (Miss Borneo Oriental Tourism 2012), who is also the finalist of MGIM 2012.

Lim added that the pageant too aimed to promote tourism in Miri City and also to train potential beauty queens to be ambassadors for Miri and Malaysia.

“We need to move away from negative perceptions that beauty pageants are merely to select beautiful women. We aspire through the pageant to celebrate women, their uniqueness, generosity, achievements, and to build futures for those in need and the less fortunate ones.”

Environmental preservation and awareness activities are also incorporated into the 10-day event to promote Miri as a green city.

There would also be plenty of exciting charity activities.

Lim said part of the proceeds raised from the pageant would be donated to the Miri Autistic Association.
