St Francis Convent, La Salle show way in traffic games

KOTA KINABALU: SK St Francis Convent outshone ten other primary schools while SM La Salle beat eight other secondary schools respectively in the Shell Traffic Education Programmes (STEP) held at Tanjung Aru Second beach yesterday.

The competition saw 18 schools from Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tuaran and Putatan districts taking part in the event jointly collaborated by City Hall, the Sabah Road Safety Council, Shell Malaysia, the Education Department, the Royal Malaysia Police and the Land Transport Department.

The event was officiated by Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir.

In his speech read by City Hall deputy director (corporate) Bahari Haji Hassan, Abidin said City Hall has always worked closely with public and private agencies to educate and promote road safety to the public.

“Participants will be equipped with road safety rules during the event.

“This is to educate them so they will understand how to stay safe on the road for themselves, their family and friends,” he said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Shell Malaysia senior manager, corporate affairs (upstream) Peing Tajang, said road safety is one of the key areas focussed by Shell Malaysia and the company have allocated over RM1 million annually to implement the programme throughout the country.

“We also implement other road safety community programmes such as defensive driving training to public transport, road safety programme with national service trainees and government agencies and road safety exhibitions.

“The ultimate objective is to reduce road injuries and fatalities through improved road safety consciousness and attitudes,” she said.

The Shell Traffic Games at Tanjung Aru is aimed at educating children on the importance of road safety through fun and interactive learning environment with a stimulated road safety park.

Also present at the event were Road Safety Department (RSD) director Herdianshah Abdul Karim, City Hall investigation and coordination director Junainah Abbie, City Traffic and Public Order chief Deputy Superintendent Peter Anak Umbuas.
