BINTULU: The construction of the Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU) at Bintulu Hospital is expected to begin in January.

Minister of Health Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the construction would be completed within a period of 15 months.

He said the consultant for the project was appointed in December 2011, while design work began last January and was completed in May.

“Tender documents are ready and should be submitted to the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Value Management Section for approval and tender is expected to be advertised in September 2012,” he said when answering a question from Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in parliament on Monday.

Liow said the BICU at Bintulu Hospital is one of the projects approved in the second rolling plan under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

“The project was first proposed in November 2010 as a proactive measure by the Ministry of Health to address and provide comprehensive treatment and care for traumatic burn injuries due to the high-risk from the oil and gas industry in Bintulu,” he said.

The scope of the project includes construction of facilities such as three burn baths, treatment room, official room, 10 beds for patients for intensive care and isolation, accommodation for caretaker, rehabilitation facilities and storage room.
