KUCHING: Effective and efficient management is the key that determines a successful business unit and not its size.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah yesterday said that it was possible for smaller companies running on an effective and efficient management system to be more successful than bigger companies.

According to the minister, rapidly expanding companies were at risk of slacking in its management system.

“For example, in the 80s where huge was considered mighty, companies were getting bigger and bigger until management became ineffective and inefficient.

Decision making became more irrelevant to the changes that were happening in the world at the beginning of the 21st century,” she said in her speech at Masama Sdn Bhd 27th anniversary dinner here on Monday.

She reminded her listeners that fast, small and efficient smaller companies and enterprises can perform better than their bigger counterparts by being resilient and dedicated to their work.

In her speech, the minister also advised couples who were running a business together to always be resilient, hardworking and professional.

During the event, Masama Sdn Bhd managing director Juita Drap and group general manager Zain Abdullah presented donations to Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching, Petra Jaya Community Rehabilitation Centre, Sarawak Society for Parents of Children with Special Needs (Pibakat), Sarawak Association For The Welfare Of Intellectually Disabled Children (Perkata) and Madrasah Darul Ulum Islamiah.

Also present at the event were Assistant Minister of Housing Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Bumiputera Chamber of Entrepreneurs (Dubs) president Datu Abang Helmi Ikhwan and Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) president Datuk Abang Karim Tun Openg.
