Miri sending strong wushu squad for Sibu meet

RARING TO GO: Miri’s wushu team for the 5th Borneo Cup International Martial Arts Tournament in Sibu this coming July 13-15, pose for a photo call.
MIRI: Miri Wushu Association will be sending a strong contingent of 13 exponents to participate in the 5th Borneo Cup International Martial Arts Tournament in Sibu this coming July 13-15.
The exponents are Phang Yii Fei, John Yu, Jordan Lau Woon, Lim Kah Voon, Alvin Hiu, Amy Bong, Liong Fwu Jye, Wong Quing Seng, Alexander Liew, Tiong Ying Shing, Russton Lau, Phang Yii Gin and Farid Adan.
According to Wushu Miri coach, Master Tiong Ching Chiong, the participants are currently training hard with the hope to produce good results at the competition and make Miri proud.
“Our team comprises ten teenagers and three children. They will compete in both international and traditional wushu events,” he revealed.
Eighteen teams, including two from Macau and one from Indonesia, will take part in the 5th Borneo Cup International Martial Arts.
Some 200 exponents will compete in the tournament which will be divided into the “Sanda” (kickboxing plus grappling techniques) and the traditional Wushu Weapons and Forms/Patterns categories.
“The competition is aimed to popularise martial arts as one of the 10th Borneo Culture Festival events, as well as to create a platform for wushu exponents to meet up and exchange ideas,” said Tiong.
He added that after the competition in Sibu, Miri’s team will participate in a competition in Brunei this September and another in Hong Kong the following month.
Meanwhile, he disclosed that the association will also organise a wushu competition at its training centre here on July 8. The main objective of the competition is to select the best athletes for the competition in Brunei.
