Penang take three gold medals from karate

KUANTAN: Penang karate do exponents gave their state a flying start in the 15th Pahang Sukma by winning three of the eight gold medals at stake on the first day of competitions yesterday.
Thor Chee Yee gave Penang their first gold medal by winning the women’s Individual Kata after edging Johor’s Chun Jin Wee while Lim Chee Wei made it a grand double by winning the men’s Individual KATA after overcoming Emmanuel Leong Theng Kuang from Pahang.
Nur Eleena Anis Ab Malik added the third from the women’s Individual Kumite Under 45kg after beating Tee May Chee from Johor.
Exponents from the Federal Territory were also in commanding form by snatching two gold medals through the men’s Individual Kumite Above 84kg after Davaraj Venkatesan beat Negeri Sembilan’s Navin Raj Permalu and Sharrma Jaya Rama from the men’s Individual Kumite Under 84kg after beating Selangor’s Kumareswaran Murugan.
Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Pahang took one gold medal each when the first day competition ended at the University Malaysia Pahang sports complex.
Negeri Sembilan’s golden girl was Shanthi Subramaniam, winner in the women’s Individual Kumite Above 68kg, while Kedah’s Sharmini Segaran took the women’s Individual Kumite Under 68kg.
Govinash Raja Kumar drew the loudest cheers from the home fans when he took the host state’s first gold from the men’s Individual Kumite Under 60kg.
Tomorrow another eight gold medals will be on offer in the Women’s KATA Team, Men’s Kata Team, men’s Individual Kumite Under 67kg, Women’s Individual Kumite Under 55kg, women’s Individual Kumite Under 50kg, men’s Individual Kumite Under 55kg, women’s Individual Kumite Under 61kg and men’s Individual Kumite Under 75kg. — Bernama
