KUCHING: A total of 1,241 participants have signed up for the ‘777 Night Chase’ – the first long-distance running event held at night to be organised in the state.

Organising chairman Dato Patrick Liew said he was pleasantly surprised and encouraged by the overwhelming public response to the event which would be flagged off at 7pm this Saturday, July 7.

“This is truly unexpected and beyond my expectation. Before the final date of registration last Saturday (June 30), we only had about 600 participants. But later on the same day, we received another 641 new registrations from the morning till the afternoon.

“The corporate bodies are also encouraging their staff to participate. It shows the people of Kuching are changing their lifestyle to be healthier and want to be involved in events that encourage neighbourhood fellowship,” he said yesterday.

He added that last minute entries will still be accepted because the organisers do not want those interested from being denied the chance to take part in this unique event, and also to be part of history.

READY FOR THE BIG DAY: The KIRC – a popular spot for recreational activities among the youths – will be the starting and finishing point of the ‘777 Night Chase’, this Saturday, July 7.

Also to be organised is the 5km-long Night Decorated Fun Bicyle City Ride

“We have also recorded the email addresses of the participants. This is to enable us to inform them on upcoming events which they can join also,” he elaborated.

Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing is scheduled to flag off the ‘777 Night Chase’, divided into 5km and 10km categories which will see runners in glowing rings and sticks running along selected routes around Kuching city.

It is one of the events lined up for the ‘777 Activities’ organised by Conqueror’s Vision Sdn Bhd and ‘www.ouryouth.my’ at the Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre (KIRC).

Also to be organised is the 5km-long Night Decorated Fun Bicycle City Ride, which would be participated by some 300 cyclists.

The main sponsors for the event are a well known food manufacturer Yeo Hiap Seng and isotonic drink brand H-Two-O.

There will be live entertainment as local bands namely Urban Cowboy, Eleven 51, Polar, Zdneosaber and United Kids of Oi will perform at the newly completed Grand Event Stage of the KIRC.
