KUCHING: Corporations can now become corporate members of the Rotary Club of Kuching Central (RCKC), effective this month.

A statement issued by RCKC said this is a new category of membership since the Rotary International and Rotary Clubs worldwide did not previously have such a provision to admit corporate members.

“With this new category of membership, corporations are able to appoint their staff as nominees who will work with the club to jointly offer services to the local community as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives,” it said.

It also announced that Dr Willie Lau Lik Wei is the new president of RCKC, taking over from Jurgen Erti.

Dr Willie, as he is affectionally known, has been working on the implementation of a major fund raising concert from the musical ‘Sound of Music’ to help refurbish a building block at Sarawak General Hospital.

This building block is to be used as a half-way house for next-of-kin from outstation whose loved ones are being hospitalised.

Dr Willie outlined his plans for the year where he aims to continue the club’s signature projects such as Avoidable Blindness and identifying people from the low-income group for enrolment with the MyKasih programme.

RCKC will also continue with the funding and support of a learning centre managed by the Salvation Army in Kuching for pre-school and lower primary school students who are slow learners and have difficulty catching up in their studies in school.

Other ongoing projects are the provision of clean water to an orphanage housing 450 children in a remote village in Nanga Piloh in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan and its partnership with Plaza Merdeka Holdings and Muslim welfare body Perkim to support poor single mothers.
