Cleaner jailed six months for stealing purse

KUALA LUMPUR: A cleaner was jailed six months by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday after she pleaded guilty to dishonestly keeping the purse of a salesgirl on Sunday.

Magistrate Mohd Azali Ibrahim ordered Sauma Wahid, 50, to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest which was the same day (July 1).

The mother of five had dishonestly misappropriated the purse belonging to Siti Hanani Zulkaple, 31, at the 6th Floor of the Sogo shopping mall in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here at 9.30am that day. According to the facts, Siti Hanani had left the purse on a cashier’s counter and on checking with the mall’s CCTV system found Sauma had taken it.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Loh Wei Dhin had urged the court the impose a penalty to serve as a lesson to the accused, who could have been jailed five years and fined for the offence.

In mitigation, Sauma, who was not represented, said: “Kakak mahu pulangkan dompet itu tapi tak sempat kerana kakak sedang bekerja pada masa itu.” (I wanted to return the purse but did not do it in time because I was working then). — Bernama
