Outstanding student in music receives Julia Chong award

KUCHING: Teacher’s college student Wan Fatmawati Wan Bujang was bestowed with the Datin Julia Chong book-prize award in recognition of her outstanding academic performance in music and active participation in cultural performances at her institute.

Wan Fatmawati received RM100 cash and RM300 worth of music books.

The book prize award was launched in 2010 in an event that featured Batu Lintang students performing scenes from two world famous musicals ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘West Side Story’.

At the recent award ceremony, the daughter of the late Datin Julia, Chong Pek Lin, an influential music teacher, composer and pianist, hoped that through the book prize award, her family and siblings will continue their mother’s quest for excellence by encouraging the young teachers of Sarawak to spread their influence and love of music.

Besides attaining an 82.4 per cent average in her music courses over the last two years, Wan Fatmawati, a pre-school major has been an active member of the choir and has performed in dance and solo singing items in various performances and served as a facilitator for workshops on Sarawak ethnic music.

The award was presented to her by the deputy director of Institut Pendidikan Guru Batu Lintang campus Jamiran Salamat at Dewan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce on June 29.

The Datin Julia Chong book prize is an annual award for the most outstanding student in the field of music at Institut Pendidikan Guru Batu Lintang campus.
