Seven get 15 years for death of police constable

MELAKA: The Sessions Court yesterday sentenced seven men to 15 years in prison for causing the death of a police constable three years ago.

Judge Abu Bakar Katar found Saiful Baharin Jalil, 31; his brother Mohd Haniffah Jalil, 30; Khairul Anwar Abu Hashim, 22; Razif Md Shah, 22; Johar Bahir, 26; Norhamezi Omar, 27; and Firdaus Md Shah, 27 guilty after the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the case against them.

The judge however allowed a stay of execution applied for by defence lawyers Abdul Kadir Ismail, Yusof Rahmat and Mohan Singh who represented the seven men.

The men were jointly charged with four others still at large on alternative charges of breaching the law, causing hurt to Mohd Fairuz Shafiee, who was 23 at the time, and causing him grievous bodily hurt which led to his death.

The victim died after being in a coma for two months.

They committed the offence at Plot 6, Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh here about 11.05 pm on November 21, 2008 under Section 149 of the Penal Code which provided up to 30 years imprisonment and fine, upon conviction.
