Schizophrenia patient charged with reckless driving resulting in one death

PETALING JAYA: An unemployed man suffering from schizophrenia was yesterday charged in the magistrates’ court with reckless driving which resulted in the death of a factory administrative officer two years ago.

No plea was recorded from Mohamad Haikal Sulaiman, 22, after the charge was read.

However, his lawyer, Mohd Shukry Zainal Abidin, told the court that his client was suffering from schizophrenia and this was confirmed by a private hospital.

Following which, deputy public prosecutor Wan Shahida Wan Omar requested for the court to order Mohamad Haikal to be sent to Hospital Bahagia, Tanjung Rambutan in Perak for observation to determine his mental status at the time of the incident.

Mohamad Haikal is charged with reckless driving that resulted in the death of 25-year-old Syazrah Sarifpuddin at Batu 16, Sungai Pelong heading to Kuala Selangor, Selangor, at 1.39am on June 14, 2010.

Magistrate K B Elena Hong Tze Lan granted the prosecution’s request and set Aug 1 for mention. — Bernama
