KUCHING: Boat services from the Kuching Waterfront to Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) will begin a year from now.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said a contractor is currently completing the unique boat at the Sibu Dockyard, details of which would be announced later.

He said the new service would give conference delegates from outside Sarawak a distinctive experience.

“It will be something unique Sarawak can offer. While waiting for the boat to be ready, the jetty at BCCK should also be ready in a year.

“We want to enable conference delegates to commute between the city and BCCK by boat, avoiding the traffic jam and offering them a whole new experience. They can even have breakfast on the boat.

“It will be like taking the boat service from Kowloon to the island in Hong Kong. But you see concrete jungle in Hong Kong, yet in Sarawak, you see natural jungle,” he told a news conference after opening the ICCA Asia Pacific Chapter Client/Supplier Business Workshop yesterday.

In his speech, Abang Johari said foreign delegates should not miss visiting Bako National Park and Tanjung Datu National Park near here.

“Sarawak is a place for people to attend meetings and seminars, at the same time offering adventure. We want to share the beauty of Kuching with the rest of the world.”

Meanwhile, ICCA Asia Pacific Chapter chairman Martin Winter described Kuching as a dynamic and progressive city.

Winter, who is also chief executive officer of Gold Coast Tourism, Australia, also lauded BCCK as a rising star in the Southeast Asia industry.
