Czech president begins visit to Sarawak

KUCHING: President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, arrived here yesterday to begin a three-day visit to Sarawak.

On arrival at the airport here, Klaus, who was accompanied by his wife Livia Klausova was received by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah, several senior government officers and community leaders were also present to welcome the Czech Republic’s president and his entourage at the airport.

Klaus is scheduled to make a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Barieng and wife Toh Puan Norkiah at the State Assembly Building before proceeding for a state dinner at the same premises.

Today, he will visit a Bidayuh longhouse at Jalan Puncak Borneo and Semenggoh Wildlife Centre near here.

Klaus will also attend a briefing on Sarawak development and Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) project at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, the state administrative centre at Petra Jaya here.

Taib will be hosting a dinner for Klaus and his wife at Demak Jaya, the chief minister’s official residence in the evening.

Klaus is scheduled to leave Kuching for Yogjakarta on Sunday. — Bernama
