READY, GET-SET, GO!: A section of participants of the 777 Night Race powers ahead at the start of the race. A total 1,364 runners ran in the 5km and 10km categories in selected routes around the city, joined by 300 cyclists for the Fun Bicycle City Ride.

KUCHING: Senior Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said he would pursue the proposal to build more bicycle lanes in the city.

He said he had proposed the matter earlier when he was the Tourism Minister but it has yet to be realised.

“I will talk again to the state government, and also the two local councils MBKS (Kuching City South Council) and DBKU (Kuching City North Commission).

“I would love to see more bicycle lanes expanded to other parts of the city, as alternative transport to reduce congestion and to promote sports and healthy lifestyle,” he said prior to flagging off the 777 Night Chase at the Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre (KIRC) yesterday evening.

Masing, also Land Development Minister, said he on behalf of the state government was very impressed with the tremendous turnout for the 777 Night Chase – the first ever night running event organised in the state.

A total 1,364 runners ran in the 5km and 10km categories in selected routes around the city, joined by 300 cyclists for the Fun Bicycle City Ride.

“At first, I thought the name has something to do with Boeing 777. It’s a catchy name nonetheless as it denotes (the time of flagging off at) 7pm, on 7th of July.

“It is events such as this that brings the people, especially the youths of Kuching, together for a good cause,” he said.

He also praised the organising chairman Dato Patrick Liew and his committee for taking the initiative and effort to organise this historic event, in conjunction with the 777 Events by Conqueror’s Vision Sdn Bhd and ouryouth.my at the KIRC.

On another matter, he said he hoped more facilities such as KIRC would be built in other divisions in the state.

He pointed out that KIRC has succeeded in encouraging youths to take up sports as activity during their free time especially at night. Also present at the function was Assistant Minister of Environment Datu Len Talif Saleh.
