SRI AMAN: Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) president Larry Sng has brushed off suggestions that the newly registered political entity exist only because of the coming general election.

“SWP is not a fly by night party, we are here for you, and not just for election. We are by Sarawakians for Sarawakians,” he told a press conference
after the party’s ‘Pentas Rakyat’ at a restaurant here Friday night.

The function attracted the interest of many media personnel who made the trip from Kuching to the restaurant here which was packed by almost 1,000 people. There were speeches and also performances by recording artistes, including Ricky El.

Sng, who has been rumoured to contest in Selangau, said SWP would continue with its plan to contest in the six seats held by BN component Parti Rakyat Sarawak. Apart from Selangau, those seats are Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Julau, Kanowit and Hulu Rajang.

Asked if his father and SWP prime mover Dato Sng Chee Hua would be among the candidates, the younger Sng said anything was possible in politics.

During the function, SWP leaders who made their speeches did not mince their words in criticising PRS although Sng admitted that BN is still the best platform and the BN government had better policies.

“I am a product of BN. I have served as a YB (elected representative), assistant minister and special youth advisor to the chief minister.

“I admit BN policies are still the best. My only problem is PRS. I feel they have failed to serve the people and too many unfulfilled promises,” he charged. The dinner also saw the presence of a potential SWP candidate in Sri Aman, Andy Lawrence, a 30 year old engineer from Kampung Temudok.

Also present were SWP senior vice president Josephine Mawat and vice president Munan Laja. Meanwhile, a party source informed that Dr Ong Lak Sai, who was the protem president, has been appointed as the secretary general. Sng’s younger sister, Jessie, will also be involved as she is made the treasurer at the party’s supreme council member last month in Sibu.
