KOTA KINABALU: Media practitioners need to understand and abide by regulations imposed on covering news on natural disasters, said Sabah Information Department director Almain Ajirul.

He said this was to ensure that the news produced was complete, accurate and current.

For this reason, Almain said the department had invited representatives from the National Security Council (MKN) to give a briefing on regulations related to covering disasters.

“I hope through this information sharing, media practitioners will better understand the guidelines that need to be followed when carrying out their duty,” he said during an Information Department Luncheon Talk which was also attended by Sabah MKN assistant director, Abdul Rasyid Abdul Hamid, here yesterday.

Almain Ajirul said the selfish attitude of certain quarters had ruined the understanding and peace which had existed so far.

“Therefore, we must not be complacent with the current situation and strive to preserve the existing peace and harmony,” he said, adding the department also planned to conduct a Merdeka Ramadhan and Aidilfitri tour in conjuction with the month of Malaysia’s independence. — Bernama
