HII Siew Siew produced a stellar performance as she cracked the old meet record in the women’s 200m butterfly to win the gold at Wisma Belia Swimming Complex yesterday.

The national swimmer from Sibu clocked a new time of 2:17.49s to chip 2.17s off the old record of 2:20.66s and Angela Chieng completed a one-two finish for Sarawak by coming in second in the race. Angela also bagged her first Sukma gold when she won the women’s 800m freestyle. The state swimming team delivered two more bronzes through Tang Chong Heng who finished third in the men’s 50m breaststroke and the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Yesterday’s two golds brings Sarawak’s swimming gold collection to four, which is has reached half the team’s target of eight golds.

Head coach Hii Hieng Chiong was happy with yesterday’s performance as the state team won the most medals – five – after three days of competition.

“We are expecting Vernon Lee to deliver golds in the men’s 400m freestyle and 1,500m freestyle, and Siew Siew to win the women’s 100m butterfly,” said Hii.

He is also expecting some medals from the men’s 4x200m relay and the women’s 4x100m relay in the next two days of competition.

Thus far the team’s medal haul is four golds, two silvers and six bronzes.

In diving, the pair of Pardika Indoma Pamg and Abdul Rashid Muhammad won the silver in the men’s 3m springboard synchronised event while Kimberly Bong managed a sixth placing in the women’s platform.

Meanwhile Richard Lim assured Sarawak of the boxing bronze when he outpointed Deenadev Murugesu of Pulau Pinang 16-8 in the quarter-finals of the men’s 46kg and fight for either gold or silver if he wins today’s semi-finals.
