KUANTAN: Robert Lu Nam Min received a special birthday gift late Tuesday night as he celebrated his 59th birthday at Megalanes Bowling Centre at Berjaya Megamall.
The state bowlers won a gold, a silver and a bronze and dedicated their achievement to their chief coach and sang a birthday song for him right after the prize presentation.
Debutant Christopher Tiong Lee Siong tasted his first success of a Sukma gold as he teamed up well with Jonathan Ding Sagan to win the boys doubles event with a total of 2,585 pins.
Boys singles gold medallist Bong Kihow and national junior Chong Jun Foo also of Sarawak settled for the silver with 2,566 pins and Muhamad Rafiq Ismail-Tan Chye Chern of Kuala Lumpur took the bronze with 2,531 pins.
The other Sarawak pair of Muhammad Syafiq Sajeli and Daniel Tan Yan Han finished in fifth place with the score of 2,424 pins.
Meanwhile, Dayang Aida Natasha Abang Jamaliddon and Syazwani Sajeli rolled to a total of 2,292 pins for the bronze in the girls doubles.
The gold was captured by Selangor’s Shariffah Marissa and girls singles champion Victoria Chin who scored 2,337 pins.
Negeri Sembilan won the bronze through the pair of Nur Amira Irdeena and Puteri Nadia Kamarul Mahadir who felled 2,321 pins.
The other very happy man on Tuesday night was no other than Amateur Tenpin Association of Sarawak (Abas) president Sunny Si.
“I am extremely overjoyed. We got a complete set of medals today … gold, silver and bronze. We could have gotten two golds today but the Selangor girls are better and we only lost by 16 pins. You can see how competitive it is on the lanes,” he said.
“I just want our bowlers to relax and enjoy themselves in this competition. They are good and they can achieve a lot.”
Si said the state bowling team have achieved the official target of two golds set by MSNS but they are still working on achieving the unofficial target of Abas.
“Our coaches are working out a strategy to get more golds in the trios tomorrow (Wednesday) and I fully support their plans and strategy,” he added.
