Mawan, Wong to meet in a week’s time over issue

KUCHING: Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat said he would be meeting SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan in a week’s time to personally state his stand on the Julau parliamentary constituency controversy.

Wong told The Borneo Post yesterday that his recent ‘ultimatum’ still stand – if PRS fielded Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang in the coming general election, he (Wong) would contest in Julau.

He said he would not want to preempt what Mawan would say about the whole thing, but he believed SPDP would rather remain in Barisan Nasional (BN) than to join him to challenge Salang.

“I am not against PRS, SPDP and the BN. I am against the renomination of Datuk Salang as BN candidate in Julau. That is the only issue here.”

Wong, who is also SPDP vice-president, however, declined to reveal if he would be joining the recently registered Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) if he did contest.

Meanwhile, political secretary to the chief minister, Wilson Nyabong, claimed that Wong had badmouthed Lubok Antu MP William Nyallau during a SWP function in Jelukong Engkilili, Lubok Antu, last Sunday.

Wong’s action is deemed unbecoming of his positions as a BN assemblyman and a lawmaker, said Wilson, who is also PRS information chief.

Also present at that gathering were SWP president Larry Sng, his father Datuk Sng Chee Hua, and top SWP leaders Munan Laja and Josephine Mawat, and former Lubok Antu MP Jawah Gerang.

“There is no reason for Wong, who is a SPDP party member and vice-president, to do what he had done.

“When Larry and his group were in Julau, Wong said it is his area, and that he has personal problems with Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang, who is also a vice-president of PRS.”

Wilson urged Mawan to take action against Wong who was seen with Larry at a big Gawai Night in Sibu recently. He said it was not right for SPDP to stay quiet on the matter for so long without taking action against Wong.
