Filipino jailed for robbing woman’s cash and phone

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The High Court Justice yesterday handed down a sentence of three years and four months imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane against a 27-year-old Filipino national for robbing a lady of her handbag, reported Borneo Bulletin.

David Jr Ponce Magsuci induced a 29-year-old woman into handing over her hand bag, which contained $75 in cash. A HTC Sensation mobile phone was also taken from the victim during the incident which occurred at the vicinity of Tamu Selera on February 23, 2012.

Justice Dato Paduka Hairolarni Hj Abd Majid heard that the defendant committed the offence when he saw the victim sitting at the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was parked at the Tamu Selera.

The defendant approached the car and without asking permission entered the vehicle and sat behind the driver’s seat and extorted the victim by placing his arm around the victim’s neck in order to coerce her into giving him money.

The victim, fearing for her life, gave up her handbag. The defendant also grabbed the victim’s mobile phone from her hand before fleeing the scene.

The victim lodged a report to the police following the incident, which led to the defendant’s arrest. Police were only able to recover the damaged mobile phone. Deputy Public Prosecutor, Dk Nurul Pg Rosli prosecuted the case.
