Late night raid targets immigration offenders

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A late night raid conducted by the Department of Immigration and National Registration last Tuesday evening rounded up 20 foreigners including four females who failed to show any valid immigration document to the raiding party, Borneo Bulletin reported.

All 20 foreigners were brought to the Immigration Law Enforcement office for further screening.

Codenamed Ops Tangkas 57, the raid was initiated by the Enforcement Section to mark the 54th anniversary of the department. More than 70 Immigration personnel from different sections were involved in the operation led by the Acting Director of Immigration and National Registration.

The operation zoomed in on targetted areas based on public tip-offs as well as accumulated information on the identified rented rooms and houses seen as potential locations for immigration offenders.

The first raid was conducted at rented rooms in PK Hj Md Yusof Building in Kg Bengkurong. The raiding party then moved on to rented rooms and houses in Jalan Berangan and Jalan Sungai Kianggeh in the capital.

From the total number of foreigners rounded up in the raid that concluded in the wee hours of yesterday 12 special passes were issued to foreigners for further investigations while two employers have been issued with a letter requiring them to be present at the enforcement office for questioning.

Meanwhile, an Indonesian couple found at the first target, believed to be engaged in close proximity have been referred to the Religious Affairs Enforcement personnel. Another Indonesian male rounded up was also found to have in his possession 14 packets of ‘Extreme’ cigarettes and this case has been transferred to the Customs Enforcement Agency.
