Woman jailed for stealing man’s belongings

KOTA KINABALU: A 35-year-old local woman was sentenced to two months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing the belongings of a local man from a room of a lodging house in Sinsuran.

Elma Nurhasan admitted before magistrate Herlina Muse to stealing a pouch containing several hospital receipts, keys and RM360 in cash belonging to the 35-year-old man on Jun 11.

She was convicted under Section 380 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail of 10 years, and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

In a separate case, two men were sentenced to jail for separate charges of assisting in keeping stolen vehicles.

Indonesian Yohanis Saki, 27, was handed down with 18 months’ jail for keeping a stolen Perodua Kancil car belonging to a local woman at the roadside of Taman Daiming in Luyang on June 26.

In the second case, local Azlan Mohd Salem, 20, received 16 months’ imprisonment for disposing of a stolen EX5 motorcycle worth RM5,000 belonging to a 21-year-old man in front of Likas Plaza on July 8.

They pleaded guilty to their charges framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a maximum jail of five years, and a fine, upon conviction.

Herlina ordered Yohanis to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail term for further action as he has no valid travel document.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Syahrin Ali prosecuted.
