Body of unidentified man found floating in Sarawak River

KUCHING: The body of an unidentified man was found floating in Sarawak River along Kuching Waterfront yesterday morning.

Members of the public spotted the body around 8.30am and notified firemen from nearby Padungan Police Station who, together with personnel from the Civil Defence Department, retrieved the body 15 minutes later.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said the identity of the deceased, who looked to be in his 40s, could not be ascertained as no personal documents were found.

“The victim was clad in an orange shirt and grey shorts. He had a red, yellow and green tattoo of a rose at the back of his neck.

“Initial investigation revealed no physical injuries on the body, which has been sent to Sarawak General Hospital for a post-mortem,” Roslan said in a statement to the media.

He appealed to the public who may be missing a family member or acquaintance to contact Padungan Police Station head Inspector Raymond Barukang at 019-8723432 or 082-424304 to assist in identifying the deceased.

The case has been classified as sudden death, pending the outcome of a post-mortem.

Police are continuing to probe the matter.
