PUTATAN: Sabah police commissioner Datuk Haji Hamza Taib, yesterday described the close cooperation between the police and the community as an important factor to reduce the crime rate in the Sabah.

He also stressed that the police welcome good working relationship and cooperation from the members of the public, including the contribution of ideas lending improvement to police work.

The police, Hamza said, would reciprocate by going down to the people to listen to their problems.

He expressed belief that if the people could co-exist harmoniously and work together for a common cause the state’s crime rate could be significantly reduced.

“Statements by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as by foreign correspondents affirming Malaysia as one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia has certainly helped to boost our confidence,” Hamza said at a community service programme and a high profile crime prevention campaign held at the Al-Jannah mosque yesterday.

Also present were management chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Noor Azam Jamaludin and Criminal Investigation Department head Senior Assistant Commissioner Omar Mammah.

Hamza and other senior police officers also handed out crime prevention pamphlets to the public.
