WE CAN DO IT: The women’s team posing with assistant chef de mission (for women’s hockey and sepak takraw) Datin Mary Sadiah Zainuddin (second right), Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) deputy president ASP Mohd Nazari Ismail (third left, back row) and Ahmad (right, back row) after emerging the winners in Group A.
Sarawak is assured of at least a bronze medal in the women’s team in sepak takraw after they defeated Perak 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals.
Prior to yesterday’s final Group A match against Perak, Sarawak has beaten Kelantan 2-1, Terengganu 3-0 and Kedah also by 3-0 to top the group.
Seeded top in the team’s contest, Sarawak will next face either Kuala Lumpur or Pulau Pinang in the last four.
And chief coach Ahmad Osman was relieved that the women’s team were able to top the group and avoid meeting table-toppers in Group B Pulau Pinang.
“We have made the semi-finals and we are hoping to beat our opponents and enter the final. If we win the gold, that will be a bonus for us,” he said, adding the state sepak takraw team’s last hope of landing a medal was in the women’s team.
“I hope they will rise to the occasion and do us proud. They are in high spirit and brimming with confidence,” he added.
In yesterday’s match against Perak, Sarawak won the first match 2-0 but lost 0-2 in the second.
The third match was very closely fought and Sarawak prevailed 2-1.
In today’s semi-finals, Sarawak will play the winner of the match between Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.
