Religious student punches his way to gold

KUANTAN: A religious school student in Johor, Muhamad Hazizul Hakim Md Sukor was crowned champion in the men’s Under 52kg Boxing competition in the 15th Sukma held at the Bitara Hall, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Rangin, here, yesterday.

The Johor lad took the gold after defeating Penang’s A. Jagadish by 20-15 while losing semifinalists Mohd Azman Mohd Azhar (Kelantan) and Mohd Zulfadlie Ibrahim (Pahang) were awarded bronze medals.

Muhamad Hazizul, a form five student at Sekolah Menengah Al-Quran Waddin, competing in his first Sukma, said he was thankful to God for his success today.

He said the success was a big milestone for him and a gift for his parents and the Amateur Boxing Association of Johor for their undying support.

Muhamad Hazizul was attracted to the sport when he was 13 and the sport has since become a passion.

Meanwhile, Kelantan boxer Khir Akyazlan Azmi took just less than a minute to ‘KO’ Nor Azman Atan from the host state, in the final of the men’s 69kg, after his hook caught his opponent’s face.

Khir, 20, who serves in the Royal Malaysia Navy, said he was satisfied with his performance and the gold medal that he had won.

He also vowed the train harder to overcome his weaknesses before facing his would be contenders at the Myanmar SEA Games next year. — Bernama
