KUANTAN: Three times overall champion Terengganu edged closer to their fourth consecutive overall title after opening up a huge gap over closest rival Selangor when action ended on the penultimate day of the 15th Pahang SUKMA here yesterday.

Terengganu who were trailing Selangor three days ago moved into contention after dislodging Selangor as the overall leader two days ago and have since not looked back.

The East Coast state that first emerged overall champion when hosting the Games in 2008, have accumulated 59 gold, 23 silver, 30 bronze medals compared with Selangor’s 47 gold, 49 silver and 55 bronze medals.

Terengganu who were leading the pack with 53 gold medals against Selangor 45 yesterday, picked up another six gold medals today while Selangor managed only two, leaving Selangor with a near impossible task of overhauling the 12-gold deficit on the final day of competition, since only less than gold medals are at stake today.

Host Pahang are third with 44 gold, 36 silver and 37 bronze medals.

Today’s competition and the chase for gold medals would be focused on squash (men and women), petanque (men’s and women’s team events) and women’s rhythmic gymnastics (ball, hoop). — Bernama
