KUANTAN: Sarawak hopes of capturing golds in boxing yesterday was dashed as gold medal hopefuls Richard Lim and Nazreen Sidi failed to beat their opponents in the finals at SMK Bukit Rangin.

Richard, who was the first boxer to step into the ring for the 46kg final bout, fell 10-24 to Mohd Hafizuddin Hakim of Terengganu.

The boxer from Kapit looked exhausted and was no match for the national boxer Hafizuddin who delivered faster and stronger punches with great skill.

Hafi zuddin led 10-3 in the first round and the end of the second round, he had stretched the lead to 20-9.

In the 60kg final, Nazreen trailed Mohd Hafizi Di of host state Pahang by 3-7 in the first round and in the second managed to close the gap on his opponent with 6-9 score.

Obviously inspired by the presence of the Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Abdullah who turned up to watch the bout,  Hafizi collected more points to beat Nazreen 12-7 to clinch the gold.

Sarawak head coach Fred Mandagi admitted that Richard and Nazreen lost their bouts yesterday because their opponents were simply too good.

“We have tried our best but the opponents were better than our boxers.”

“They took advantage of this to launch attacks and we lost many points due to fatigue,” he said.
