Convict put behind bars again for cheating

KOTA KINABALU: A 37 years old man, who is now serving sentence for a cheating conviction, will spend another five years and two months behind bars and ordered to be given four strokes of the cane for committing a similar offence.

Venson Makasut pleaded guilty before magistrate Herlina Muse to all the charges framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail of 10 years and whipping and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

On the first and second counts, the undefended accused admitted to deceiving a man of RM660 and RM550 respectively, as payments to buy a car at a restaurant in Papar and behind a shopping mall here respectively, between Aug 27 and Sept 21, 2009.

For each of the charges, he was jailed for one year and ordered to be whipped once and
both sentences to run concurrently.

On the third charge, the accused was handed down two years’ jail plus one stroke of the rattan for cheating a man of RM3,350 for the same purpose at a coffee shop here on June 3, 2009.

For the fourth charge of cheating another man of RM4,000 for the same purpose at a restaurant in Lido, Luyang on Aug 26, 2009, he received another 14 months’ jail and one stroke of the cane.

The court ordered the two jail terms to run consecutively.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Syahrin Ali prosecuted while Venson was unrepresented.
