Cops, photographer to testify in M-League match assault

KUCHING: Two policemen and a photographer from a national newspaper were called as witnesses in the assault of a policeman by a college student after a football match between Sarawak and Kelantan at Stadium Negeri in Petra Jaya in April.

Abang Saiful Zahrin Abang Abdul Rahim, 30, was charged with assaulting Lance Corporal Amzari Othman at about 11pm on April 7.

The assault was said to have injured his face.

Saiful Zahrin claimed trial to the charge framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries 20 years’ jail and a fine or whipping upon conviction.

It was said the policeman was on duty, trying to prevent the disgruntled football supporters from causing a riot after the Malaysian Super League match.

Saiful and his brother Abang Mohammad Zakri Abang Abdul Rahim, 28, were also jointly charged with obstructing three policemen from discharging their duties during the incident.

The duo claimed trial to the charge that comes under Section 186 of the Penal Code, carrying a maximum two years’ jail or RM10,000 fine, or both.

Sessions Court Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong released them on bail.

Yesterday was the second day of the hearing which continues today.

Counsels Shankar Ram, Francis Teron and Daniel Ling represented the brothers while DPP Nur Nisla Abdul Latif prosecuted.
